A Whole New Way To Linux Desktop

There should be an image here! When most of us think about the Linux desktop, we generally think of KDE, GNOME, etc. But today I happened upon one desktop option for Linux that quite frankly, redefines the way I look at at the Linux desktop and the applications that run on it.

Enter Étoilé, a desktop that is like most other Linux desktop solutions with one significant exception - it runs services instead or software programs. Yes, you read that right. According to the description, Étoilé wants to develop software services than run on their own, while also being able to complement one another, thus creating a more efficient desktop experience.

It’s not that the desktop is against software applications, rather the desire to avoid using monolithic applications instead. Truth be told, I can see the advantage. Now the real question is whether or not we can make this float as a usable alternative to some of the existing desktops out there already.

It’s worth reading the article David Chisnall (one of the Étoilé leads wrote a few years back on ‘where Unix sucks’ - you can really see that a lot of the ideas in Étoilé stem from these frustrations, with others from some projects Apple abandoned (OpenDoc).

Another way of looking at it, is an alternative evolution of the NextStep/OpenStep frameworks that form the basis of Apple’s Cocoa framework.
