Browsers With Choice

Here in the States, if you are buying a Windows box, chances are really good that it will be using Internet Explorer by default as this is what Microsoft provides you. This means if you want an open source browser, it will be up to you to go out and find one.
Across the pond in the EU on the other hand, things may end going down in a very different sort of way. So different as a matter of fact, that I am sure that Microsoft is none too pleased about it at all. Apparently, EU Windows users might be able to vote or simply choose, which browser they would like to go with.
Speaking for myself, I think this is a great idea. Not because I am being anti-Microsoft, rather because most Windows users I know like having a little bit of choice out of the box. Especially those who do not know the names of the alternative browsers, only that they would like to try out the other options out there to see what they have to offer.

Most Windows users I know have no idea there is anything other than IE and wouldn’t know what to do with another browser if it bit them.
“Oh no - I can’t use that… I need to use Internet Explorer to get to the internet.”
“Why can’t I open up this picture in Excel?”

Btw, there’s a beta of a browser (Luna?) that’s more of a shell than anything else. It allows you to choose from 3 browser engines. Pretty cool in principle but below beta quality.

Mmmm..I have never used the default MS’s IE that much especially earlier version. I have used Netscape early on and later sticked with Firefox. Yes, I would preferred that when I bought a new computer I was given a choice. I bought a new quad-core machine from Dell last spring with Windows Vista Home Premium OS and with the 2nd service pack installed through scheduled window update I was quite stunned that IE 8 is quite decent and less buggy than earlier versions. I now have 5 different browsers on my machine MS’s IE, Firefox, the World, Google Chrome, and even Mac’s Safari. Each has its strong and week spots. I default browser is still Firefox. I’m so used to the way it functions that I don’t think I could do without it.

I think it’s kind of stupid. Let’s face it. The people who would care enough to choose something other than Microsoft are going to go out and download it anyway.

Just like most Beginners who start with the Hell of AOL, that’s all they know and tend to stay with it.
I’ve used all of the better known ones for a 1 to 2 month period at different times and tend to always fall back to the fox.

@Noah Delong - I agree, everytime I try another browser I keep coming back to Firefox, I can’t seem to get along without it!
