From Easyubuntu To Perfectbuntu

ubuntuIs Ubuntu simple enough for newbies? Honestly, I think it is, but with the disclaimer that having a managed solution using Ubuntu is always going to be “easier”. That being said, take one solution picking up where Automatix and EasyUbuntu left off. This solution is a bash script called Perfectbuntu.

Speaking as guy who used to write up his own bash scripts for handling Evolution email backups before the feature even existed, I can certainly maintain a healthy respect for any script that makes restricted codec/font installation a bit more streamlined. Yes, restricted codecs are indeed easy to installed as you are prompted for them if you download an MP3 only to attempt playing it. But honestly, as I live in the States myself, I choose to support efforts to ensure new generations of GStreamer and Ubuntu hav funds to work with. This means I purchase my usage rights or stick to the open formats. Color me weird. I run PowerDVD on my 8.10 system and can honestly say, it just “feels” better than other methods of DVD playback in Linux. Again, personal preference, use VLC if you are a cheapskate.

Regarding fonts however, I can see the appeal of using the above script as a newbie. And so long as the newbie realizes that not all scripts are benign, all the better for opting to go this route with automating software installation.  But let me be clear, never, ever execute code in Linux (or any OS) unless you completely trust its source. The above example is safe, but something found in the forums someplace might not be. User beware and be careful!
