NVIDIA Cards On Ubuntu Should Not Create Envy

How difficult is it to get NVIDIA or ATI cards working with the latest Ubuntu releases? I say releases plural as there are still people using the most recent three selections ranging from 8.04 to 9.04. Well based on my experience, NVIDIA and ATI are about the same these days. But then again, I have NEVER used the restricted driver manager that came with Ubuntu as I have never had anything but problems with it no matter what I used it for.
No, when it came to using restricted drivers for my video cards, I opted to use the Envy utility instead as to date, for myself personally, it has yet to fail me once. And perhaps more importantly, before blindly enabling the restricted drivers in a new Ubuntu release, I can check the Envy release notes to see if there are bugs that I need to be aware of. Something that is a bit more involved with the restricted driver manager if you are unsure as to what you are trying to query.
These days however, I guess this about to matter a whole lot less as the Envy creator is now heavily involved with Xorg on Ubuntu and propriatary video driver support upcoming Ubuntu releases. But for now, despite any improvements or short comings to be had with the restricted driver manager, I will likely stick with what has worked for me for the past couple of years - Envy.

Interesting, for me it was the opposite. The restricted drivers always worked for me, although not always does it have the most recent driver. On the other hand, when I tried Envy I could never get it working smoothly. And even removing it gave its problems (had to switch to nv for some time).

Why mess with any of that stuff anyway.
Downloading the newest driver from nvnews.net and typing ’sudo sh NVID*.run’ isn’t that hard. :)

Odd, I use the Restricted Drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce 7000m card and everything works perfect.
