Don’t Want Windows - Stop Buying It Then

linuxStories like this never cease to amaze me. In the effort that was spent in getting a refund for an OS that will not be used on the hardware purchased, a person could simply opt to spend a little more and support one of the vendors out there who selling Linux products only.

Yes, I realize this basically cuts out of the big box stores. However what you will get in return is first class service, knowledge that you are supporting efforts that reflect the same vision in software as you and best of all, no Windows tax. Now I realize that some of you will go back to where I stated that it might cost a little more. And that is fair to point to this.

Yet at the end of the day, using Linux is about more than getting the cheapest deal possible. It’s about not having to wonder what your software is actually doing behind the scenes and knowing that your chosen OS, is available to everyone regardless of income level.

This is the kind of elitism and the sort of solution to problem that helps nobody and really nobody will follow. The people who say they will follow this advice would already have done this in the first place. This is the sort of preaching to the choir that makes Linux forums and blogs intimidating for new years. I’ve seen it in many instances “You use OpenOffice in WINE? You must not really believe in open source ideals!” “You should be willing to use the open source over the proprietary driver because it’s free as in speech, that 500% performance loss shouldn’t matter.” “Oh, instead of trying to run Fallout 3 on Linux, instead you should use Tremulous, it’s a great open source game :), am I right fellow Linux advocates?”

“knowing that your chosen OS, is available to everyone regardless of income level.”

That’s probably the last thing I would think of when I boot up my OS. Yeah, it’s a nice point, but it’s not a selling point for me.

I probably should have put “selling point” in quotes, lol.

“nowing that your chosen OS, is available to everyone regardless of income level.”

Not true at all. What about folks who can’t afford a computer of their own and have to go to the local library for access?

I absolutley agree. But I’m still waiting for the OS X to be a viable platform for gaming. All the other stuff i do on the computer: programming (well there is a learning curve to this) and web design I can do well or better on the OS X. Yes I know you were talking about Linux but it’s the same thing. Trust me :)
