VLC has been one of my favorites media players for as long as I can remember. The habit of using the player started on Windows and was later carried over with me as I evolved into a full time Linux enthusiast. But it is true that there have been some issues holding it back on some platforms until recently. Most notable for OS X users who merely wanted to utilize this media player to its fullest extent.
Well thanks to this new update for everyone, not only are there some new features that I will be highlighting below, performance for OS X has been greatly improved. In addition to this, there has also been tremendous improvements by adding the following decoders:
- Real Video 3.0 & 4.0 using FFmpeg
- Better OS X performance
- Decoder updates for Windows users
What makes this so special over the other media players that already come with the typical Windows, Linux or OS X install? Simple, VLC will play pretty much anything you can throw at it!
