Firefox 3.0.8 Is Out And It Still Runs Like Crap!

As a full time Ubuntu Linux user, I am most certainly someone who lives by and loves using open source software. And at one time, I was a happy Firefox user. Unfortunately ever since about v3.0, Firefox has run with a level of performance of a drunk ballerina going through an obstacle course. Yes, sad as it is to say, Firefox on Linux runs really slowly.

So you will have to forgive my lack of excitement on the announcement of Firefox 3.0.8. It was only after making a number of tweaks to it that it was something that was not running with the speed of molasses. On the flip side of things, I suppose I should be happy that I was able to do something with the browser. After all, it’s not like I was really wanting to start using Opera again. And Konqueror…please.

No, for my needs, it will continue to be a Firefox lifestyle for this Linux geek. After trying countless other web browsers throughout the years on countless distros, I always end up coming back to the big Mozilla made fox in the hen house.

Weird. Firefox 3* has always screamed on my Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 installs.

And keep in mind this is on multiple dual-core PCs with at least two gigs or RAM. It’s not new really, cruise the forums and you will find that this is a common problem for a number of folks.

To be blunt, Firefox in WINE runs much faster…and that is just sad.

Yeah, I’d noticed this about recent FF releases too. Thought it was just me though. I hope Chrome comes to Linux - then we’ll be fine.

I am running Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.8 on an old Pentium 4 CPU 1500MHz with 512 MB memory with no speed issues. Now that is not to say I am real happy with Firefox and Flash. Sometimes Flash will crash Firefox and it will just close with no warning. Not sure if this is a Flash or Firefox issue or both.

I read somewhere a few days ago that Firefox on Windows is faster than Firefox on OS X and Linux. I run Vista and Firefox is fast on this OS. Hopefully those speed issues for Linux and OS X get resolved for you guys in the coming releases.

Joelg88 - just use the tweaks link in the article, it brings everything in just great. Or….just use http://getswiftfox.com instead. ;)

Try disabling the RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin 1.0.

My FF 3.0.8 was running really BAD after I downloaded and enabled this plugin. I disabled it and FF is running much better and the memory creep seems to have disappeared.

On a Core2Quad w/ 6GB of RAM, Firefox3 still crawls and crashes every other minute. I tried it on Debian, Ubuntu and FreeBSD .. same story every time.

Bottom line: Someone needs to make a good browser again. We’re almost back to the IE days.. at least FF is still a bit safe heh.
