Default Sound Card Not Sticking In Ubuntu!

  • No Related Post

Today, David asks:

Hey Matt, read your how-to and watched the video on Youtube for getting
the default sound card to “stick”, but it doesn’t seem to be working for
me. I have an Audigy from Creative Labs (had a Xi-Fi bad had to go back
to my old sound card…don’t get me started on that) and a USB headset.
I’m using the script you suggested to set the default but it doesn’t
seem to “stick”.

code:———————–

#! /bin/sh -f

gksudo asoundconf set-default-card Audigy
——————-:end code

Everything still seems to come out my USB headset. I should say it
worked one time, then I rebooted and tried the script again and no go.
Some things seems to work with it but then others like Totem and Wine
want to use my headset. I play WoW and use my headset for the voice
chat and the Audigy for the sound. Any thought?

Thanks for putting together the how-to and taking time to help the newbs
out there like me.

Based on what you are describing, it sounds like you are dealing with the issue talked about in this post. Basically, with the exception of Pulse Audio, which I believe was released in Fedora 8, Ubuntu uses a sound system that means some devices tie up the existing sound card, so long as they are left running. As I demonstrate here, if I am viewing a video via Flash in my web browser, trying to play something via a music player on my PC is going to send it to my USB headset. And vice versa. So if you are finding that Totem or WINE are playing the sound through the wrong device, verify nothing else is tying it up, like a web browser, music application or etc.

So unless gksudo asoundconf list is now refering to your device as something new thanks to an update, this still works. You just cannot have other applications tying up the sound system in Ubuntu with a USB headset and soundcard in use. Hope thise clears things up some.

Do you have an Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Simply Mepis, Linspire/Freespire or PCLinuxOS related question? Perhaps you are just burnt out on writing on the walls with crayons? Whatever the comments may be, drop me a line, and you too can “Just Ask Matt”- Linux Edition!

I just bought an Acer Aspire One with Linux Lite. The speakers and mic or crappy, so I wanted to try to use my Plantronics usb headset, but it doesn’t work with the Aspire One for some reason. Any solutions? I knew absolutely nothing about Linux OS until I received the Acer notebook yesterday.
