Open Office - Making It Start Faster!

This is actually much simpler than you might expect, therefore this may be a short post. Alright, let’s get on with it.

  1. Open up Write or Calc.
  2. Goto Tools, then Options.
  3. Locate the setting on the left called ‘Memory’. Then on the right, check to make sure that the following are in place.
  • Number of steps is set to 20.
  • Graphics Cache for Open Office is set to 128 MB.
  • Memory per object is set to 20.0 MB.
  • Enable systray quickstarter is check-marked.

From here, simply hit OK and restart the program. From this point on, the applications of the Open Office suite will run MUCH faster at start-up. ;)

Matt… ridiculous how quickly that opens now.

And I repeat, ridiculous.

So it is safe to assume you are happy with the results? :)

Fine and dandy, but what is the down side? I have found that for 99 per cent of all tweaks there is an undisclosed consequence that is quite often negative. The programs developers usually make some compromise in their code for a reason and the tweak just alters that compromise. What am I trading off to make Open Office start faster?

Mike: Great point, Mike. Actually, the only two logical thoughts on this that I can come up with are the following:

-On a Windows box, this could be used to run an exploit if one was developed.

-It places a system tray icon on both Linux.Windows at all times.

Any others that you have found?

The tweak speeds the loading of OO (2.2.0) with OS X (10.4.10), too. By the way, there is no setting for: enable systray quickstrarter. Perhaps, this is fortunate, since you believe that the permanent systray may be a downside to the tweak.

Ed: Definitely present in Oo 2.0.4 on Ubuntu. Now that I think about this, it is likely something to do with the fact that it is on OS X and how its UI is laid out. I figure it’s a possible reason for its absence?

Btw, how do you like Oo for OS X vs NeoOffice?

Did Oo for the Mac ever fix that annoying X11 error?

Wow, that was awesome! Thanks for the tip!

Well OO2 in my P4 2.0 GHz desktop with 512MB ram works blazing fast. BUT my P3 850MHz with 256MB ram laptop, OO2 used to just crawl. Two solutions that really helped -
1. enable quickstarter
2. customize memory to -
Total memory for OO - 5MB
Memory Per Object - 1.5MB
Redo steps - 20

It works fantastic now.

I know its insane! but it really works!

Wow its faster sunsoft should ad like gadgets like ms office’s infamous shortcutbar:)

p.s why do i see a locker gnome everywhere
