Dial-up On Ubuntu - Just Ask Matt

Today, Holger asks:

Thank you for inviting to “Just Ask” a question. I am on dial-up ( I live too far away for DSL or Cable service) and my Ubuntu 6.10 does not connect with EarthLink server ( Modem connects when in I am in Ms Windows). My search in Linux sites pointed to Model 3CCM756 PCMCIA modem, I found it on EBay (15.00 Shipped). I dual boot the Sony PCG-GRX560 Lappy with Win.XP Home on 15 Gb partition, drive C: and on 15 Gb. drive E: I installed Ubuntu 6.10 disk from the Ubuntu Linux Bible Book, by Von Hagen, a well written, could not have done it without it reference book but the Evolution Setup by Ubuntu, needs much clearer instructions. I called Earthlink but they do not support Linux. On a side note: the 2Wire PCMCIA “b” card made the wireless connection a plug and play event at the Lacrosse,Wi. Public Library Wireless access point, connecting Windows and Ubuntu 6.10. but it is located 25 miles from me.

Hi Holger, if I am understanding correctly, you need help getting Evolution working with your Internet connection? I see another, simpler option for you on Ubuntu and that is to use an email client called Thunderbird. Much less in the way of bells and whistles, plus the first time you go to run it, you will find that it will walk you through much of the email set-up process. Just install it from Applications, Add/Remove at the top of the screen. Now on to what EarthLink refuses to help you with. First, Earthlink will give this to you needed info:

  • The SMTP server information.
  • The POP server information
  • Your email address and password.

From here, follow these instructions step by step and you should be all set. Now if I missed something, or you are struggling getting the modem to dial out, let me know.

Do you have an Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Simply Mepis, Linspire/Freespire or PCLinuxOS related question? Perhaps you are just burnt out on writing on the walls with crayons? Whatever the comments may be, drop me a line, and you too can “Just Ask Matt - Linux Edition!
