Is Ubuntu Linux a Sensible Alternative for Mac Users?

  • No Related Post

In actuality, I found this argument to a very valid argument. I mean, is Ubuntu the best fit for everyone looking to get away from their existing OS choice?

A friend of mine phoned to ask if I thought he should install Ubuntu Linux on his Macs - a 1.33 GHz G4 iBook currently running OS X 10.4 “Tiger” and a 1.25 GHz Power Mac G4 tower with OS X 10.3 “Panther” installed.
My friend had read a feature in the local newspaper extolling the virtues of Ubuntu Linux and thought it sounded interesting.
Ubuntu is a other project dedicated to making Linux user-friendly enough to be used as a mainstream desktop OS, and it’s arguably the most successful iteration toward that objective to date. Ubuntu supports Intel/AMD PC hardware as well as Power PC Macs.
Does Ubuntu Linux make any sense for Macintosh users?
In my friend’s case, I would say no, and I did.
He’s an experienced, but not especially tech-savvy, non-power user, and the geek aspect of Linux would be of no interest or service to him. The machines he has are powerful and up-to-date enough to run OS X very comfortably. As a matter of fact. Linux really is viable to a Mac user. For several reasons.

1. Eye candy. Tiger, or Leopard for that matter comes nowhere close to Compiz on Linux. SImply gorgeous. Head, shoulders, and feet above any wild cats is Linux. The most beautiful linux distros together with compiz just shine: Sabayon linux, Ubuntu Gutsy/Compiz/Avant Window Navigator

2. Functionality. Dashboard, Spotlight, Quicksilver, wot have you. Anything you can trick out your Mac with, Linux can do too. Dashboard is standard with Compiz fusion, Coverflow too, spotlight is there in Ubuntu Gutsy desktop search, quicksilver has been cloned already, bla bla bla…

3. Apps. Linux has more apps made for it than any other OS out there. And the best part is that it’s all free. Are the apps good? You bet…

4. Programming. Any programmer NEEDS linux over OSX. All the languages are there in *nix. But sadly, not much support for Macs

I’ve used UNIX all my geekhood, and I know that linux is a viable switch for Mac users. Why? Because I own a Mac with leopard. And I still find myself dual booting between OSX and Ubuntu Gutsy. Which do I use more?… Linux…
