Sun Delivers New Server Line

As many of the server companies know, there is a lot of untapped potential in the financial services and telecom markets. And so, we know have Sun working to monetize these markets with a new line of servers…

Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) has rolled out a new line of 64-bit servers targeted at the financial services and telecom markets. Codenamed “Galaxy,” the latest Sun Fire x64 servers, powered by AMD (NYSE: AMD - news) Opteron processors, are optimized for Sun’s Solaris 10 operating system but also support
Linux and Windows environments.

The Sun Fire x64 servers include the two-way Sun Fire X2100 and four-way Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 servers. The objective in supporting multiple operating systems, according to Sun, is to provide a single administration point for managing enterprise environments that include Solaris, Linux and Windows machines.

For the new server rollout, Sun has enlisted several software partners — including BEA Systems (Nasdaq: BEAS - news), Checkpoint, Computer Associates (NYSE: CA - news), Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL - news), SAP (NYSE: SAP - news), SunGard, Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC - news) and VMware — who will optimize their wares for the new x64 servers.
