Knoppix to the rescue!!

And yet, another story of how Knoppix made recovery from a Windows crash a wonderful possibility.

So out of the blue my laptop running windows XP decides to die and wont boot up. I could log on in safe mode but despite spending days trying numerous things - all roads pointed to the dreaded system restore disk which as you know potentially wipes the disks clean. Unfortunately I don’t have a CD writer or a floppy for it so I was faced with the prospect of loosing all my data. On a whim a colleague suggested I try Knoppix, a Linux distro which boots and runs completly from the CD allowing access to windows partitions. Well I had forgotten how much I loved working with Linux! Popped in the disk, booted it up and it was running. For some reason I couldn’t get it to mount my usb pen - although others have seemed to get this working. So I was faced with having to access my laptop from my desktop PC.
