First off, I do agree with the recommendation of dropping Gentoo and trying something else. SuSE is great as is Mandrake. But for the noob, nothing beats either Simply Mepis or Xandros. Linspire still does not impress me too much.

Um, gentoo is rough. Really rough. It’s a pretty DIY style distribution, with a very DIY style software distribution system.
Ask them if you can use SuSE instead. [Read the comments]
