If you’ve been interested in running FreeBSD as a desktop system, then you need to take a look at PC-BSD. Currently under development (version 0.5a is available as of this writing), the distribution aims to create a system based on FreeBSD’s stability with a desktop suitable for both home and business use.
It certainly looks like they’re headed in the right direction. For one, they’ve created a graphical installer that should make it a lot easier for new users to get the system installed. I browsed through their screenshots and an OSDir screenshot tour, which showcases both the installation process and the fact that they’ve got the latest version of KDE (3.4) included with the distro.
They’ve definitely piqued my curiosity. I’d like to see if they have any specialized tools for administering a FreeBSD system, say something to handle port and kernel upgrades, and whether or not some of the KDE system management applets are fully compatible with FreeBSD or not.
I’m going to see if I can get it installed on a spare box around our office. If I get a chance, I’ll post further thoughts. If anyone out there has already tried it, I’d be interested in hearing what you think as well.
