Stellar Yoper Review

  • No Related Post

I’ll admit it up front: I’m not a big distro-testing nut. I have too much work to do to spend time wiping and reinstalling my system every week or so, and I don’t like having to tweak and reconfigure everything once I’ve got my themes, programs, etc. established. On the upside, it ensures I have plenty of time to get my own work done. On the downside, I often feel like there’s a distro out there that probably has some great features that I’m missing out on. As a result, I tend to read articles and reviews of the various distros as they appear.

Today I found this review of Yoper, aka “Your Operating System”. I’ve read about Yoper in a few places before, and it also appeared on the DVD for one of the UK Linux magazines. It’s always received good reviews, too, but not necessarily as glowing a review as this one.

Which is the reason I’ve passed the link to you all. Many of us may not be willing to give up some of the fine-grained installation control of other distributions, but it sounds like Yoper may be a good solution for a Linux newbie. By providing both apt and rpm install capabilities, for example, a newbie won’t be left scratching his head wondering why the new app they just downloaded won’t install. In fact, if it’s as good as Preston feels it is (he gives it a 10 out of 10), it may be one worth trying on non-geek friends and family members.
