Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA are the two big buzzwords in IT security these days, and compliance with them is a big issue for businesses and hospitals. They often seem daunting with their extensive procedures and audits, even for someone such as myself who doesn’t have to deal with either directly. In fact, hearing a friend discuss them reminds me of the pair of three-inch binders packed with paperwork that were the Standard Operating Procedures for a retail chain I worked for.

Steven Drew’s article at Help Net Security, however, suggests we should adjust our mindset regarding Sarbanes-Oxley, or SOX, compliance. Sure, it may be a pain to ensure you’re fully compliant, but Drew demonstrates there are several benefits that could come from SOX compliance, just the security of the protected systems.
