New Philips Webcam Driver Contributor

Due to a dispute over the inclusion of binary modules with the kernel code, the previous maintainer of the Philips USB webcam drivers (pwc modules) ceased his development efforts. It boiled down to a difference in ideologies; the kernel maintainers want to keep all the code completely open, while the developer felt the binary module was the best way to get the best performance out of the cameras. While both parties have their points, it was inevitable it would come to a head, and a shame for the support to be pulled.

Fortunately a new maintainer, Luc Saillard, has picked up the project. His website can be found here. Most of his work appears to be concentrated on the 2.6 series of kernels, but untested patches for the 2.4 series are available for download.

The good news appears those of us with Philips-based webcams (such as my Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000) won’t be left out in the cold. Those of us running 2.4 kernels will need to take our chances and hope for the best.

The old modules are still available (for now) on the original maintainer’s site if you should need to backtrack.
