Knoppix Hacks Review

Looks like the Knoppix Hacks book is a real hit! According to the reviewer from Linux Forums, this is useful for all who want to expand their Knoppix knowledge.

Keep in mind now, this book is perfect for both the new user and seasoned user alike. While informative, the book apparently was targeting a little too broad of a base for the taste of the reviewer.

Being the first book of the O’Reilly ‘Hacks’ series I’ve read, I wasn’t sure what to expect from ‘Knoppix Hacks’. Was it going to be in essence a manual in published form? Or rather a vague overview of the various features of Knoppix? I was both surprised and delighted to find that ‘Knoppix Hacks’ was neither.

The best way that I can think to describe it as is a comprehensive list of various tips and tricks, or ‘hacks’, to make one’s usage of Knoppix, more effective, productive, and efficient. The book also includes a forward by Klaus Knopper, the creator of Knoppix. Of course, to make any use of this book, one needs a copy of Knoppix. But don’t despair, the book ships with a copy of Knoppix 3.4 on CD. Even though a newer version of Knoppix (v3.6) came out fairly early on in the production of ‘Knoppix Hacks’, according to the author, he decided to continue writing this book for version 3.4 because it had been tested thouroughly, and was the latest stable release. He does mention, however, that most of these hacks should work on later versions of Knoppix, and when this is not the case, he makes a note of it.
