Just as I’m getting my thoughts together to post my preliminary thoughts on OpenZaurus version 3.5.1 on my Zaurus SL-5500, the OZ team releases version 3.5.2 which is supposed to include both bug fixes and software upgrades. So, it looks like I’ll try to get it installed tonight and try again next week. If anyone out there is already running 3.5.1 or is mulling an upgrade from 3.2, you’ve got another option.
I hope one of the fixes includes /etc/resolv.conf — the file didn’t even exist after I installed 3.5.1, and it took me a while to figure out why I couldn’t resolve domain names yet I could ping non-local IPs with no trouble. I also encountered a bug where, during the initial boot, the software tried to scan my SecureDigital card but there was no way past the menu asking me what to do with the files it found. I powered down to try again, and then it wouldn’t power back up at all, forcing me to retry the install (which worked, fortunately).
All Zaurus models except the SL-A300 are supported, and there are three images available: Opie and GPE, which are essentially two different GUIs, and the bootstrap image, which is a CLI-only version. I started with Opie on 3.5.1 and will stick with it for 3.5.2.
