SSH Keys Explained

  • No Related Post

Brian Hatch of Hacking Linux Exposed has been running a series of articles about SSH over at Security Focus, and they’ve been great reading. One of these articles is “SSH User Identities”.

This article covers the creation and management of SSH keys and their associated passphrases, and discusses managing those keys for both SSHv1 and SSHv2 authentication. I missed this article when it was first published, and it’s a precursor to the ssh-agent article I linked previously.

While this may first look like useful information for sysadmins alone, it’s actually useful for anyone who wants to keep their remote access secure. Many webhosting providers offer SSH access to user accounts, and there would be no need to broadcast all your data over the air from a corner Starbucks when you need to access data on your home system.
