Installing Kino

There’s an article coming in the December issue of Linux Journal which will feature the Kino movie program, but the authors have contributed a companion article for the LJ web site that has information on installing Kino and exporting MPEG videos.
Not surprisingly, there are a lot of steps to installing Kino from scratch as you have to figure in hardware support, kernel support, and a multitude of codecs and libraries related to recording and playing audio and video on Linux. Fortunately the authors have a nice graphical table depicting the Kino dependency tree to get you started. Information on both source and binary installs is available.
Also note if you’re running Fedora Core 2, you’ll need to do a kernel upgrade (which should hardly be surprising as I found I had to upgrade the kernel for several Fedora and Red Hat distros when using hardware such as webcams and my Zaurus).
After the install procedure, there are some tips for dealing with dropped frames and handling certain effects, and the export tips for creating the final MPEG videos. I guess now I no longer have an excuse to put off getting my boys’ birthdays and baptisms off the MiniDV tapes so I can reuse them…
