The Difference Between GNU/Linux Distributions

  • No Related Post

What is GNU/Linux? What is the difference between RPM and Debian based distros? How do community based distros differ from commercial ones? What exactly is source code and how do you install packages using it? These are all interesting questions and I am sure some of you have thought about them already. Well now you can get the answer to these and many other questions in the latest jem report. In addition to the abovementioned the report also looks at the utilities used in the various distros and differences in the updating mechanisms used. If you have never fully understood the fundamental similarities or differences between the various distros this GNU/linux primer will get you up to speed. Understanding these key issues will help you to decide which distro is right for you.

“Overall, your GNU/Linux experience is going to be different with every different distro you install and use. Some will be easier than others (for the easiest time, I recommend Linspire, SuSE, Mandrake, XandrOS or Lycoris), and some will offer superior methods of staying up-to-date (Gentoo, FreeBSD, Debian, Knoppix, MEPIS), while others offer their own special advantages. In the end the choice is yours; I won’t presume to recommend one distribution over another. The only solution is to consider your needs and experiment with several distros that look like they may meet them.”
