The Ultimate Linux Desktop?

What would you consider the ultimate Linux desktop? I know you have your opinions on that I certainly have mine. But in general I think this statement describes a typical users’ perspective “they don’t want to become a computer expert to do their work. They do not want to learn a new operating system to get their work done. They want an easy way to access the tools they need to get their job done and they need a robust and reliable environment to run their applications.”
In Linux finding the choice that is right for you can be difficult there are literally hundreds of distros, the question is where to start? My suggestion would be to start with the mainstream distros and work from there. Using myself as an example since starting to experiment with Linux about a year ago I have tried Mandrake, Suse, Slackware, Minislack, Knoppix, Kanotix, Gnoppix, Morphix, Lorma, Fedora, Damn Small Linux, Mepis, SimplyMepis, PCLinuxOS, SLAX, Peanut, inux From Scratch, Overclockix and most recently Yoper. Right now my system multiboots Windows 2000 Professional, Mandrake 10.0 (soon to be 10.1), Suse9.1, Minislack0.2, Land Yoper 2.0.1-4. This doesn’t mean to say I don’t like the other distros as a matter of fact with help from Linux communities like SNFL-All Things Linux I have been able to get most of them configured just the way I wanted. The point is there is a distro that’s right for you but it might require some looking to find it.
This brings me to the latest review I read entitled The Best Free Desktop Linux . . . and how to make it better. This turns out to be a review of SimplyMepis which is really an excellent distro. This indepth eight page review looks at ways to enhance your Linux experience with the right apps, showing you how to tranform your Linux distro into a capable desktop system. Because SimplyMepis is debian based getting the latest software is only an apt-get away. Who said Linux had to be difficult? Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did:-)
