Beginner-friendly Linux OS: Desktop/LX

Linux can be friendly! Granted, there are still a few devices that take quite a bit of work to get them to work properly, but it can be done. Today PCWorld looks at the Lycoris Desktop as one such solution for Windows users. Designed to almost be a Windows clone of sorts, Windows users should [...]

ATI readies big Linux driver push

ATI is finally getting serious about their Linux drivers, according to a report by The Inquirer. It is my hope that this is just the beginning of “big-hardware’s” change of heart. With any luck, this will continue as a trend as more and more hardware companies get onboard by making sure that drivers are available [...]

Do You Install KDE or GNOME?

Actually, that’s a trick question. You should install both. Even if you plan to use a different window manager or desktop environment (BlackBox, FVWM, etc.), it’s a good idea to install KDE and GNOME just because you never know when you’re going to run into an application that requires either package’s libraries. Well, sort of. Tux may not be able to fly, but he’ll be helping a German aerospace firm test their engine designs with 3D modeling. The Penguin and the iPod

I’m not a big music nut, but I have to admit even I’ve been curious about the iPod (especially when combined with the possibilities presented by the iTrip >:). However, given both of my computers run Linux, I’m going to need a Linux solution to synch it.

Looking For Tux Images?

Sun Microsystems has apparently backed away from its efforts to acquire a Linux software distribution — for now.

Linux proof of open-source software success

By now, nearly everyone has heard of the Linux operating system. Less have used it, and even less actually understand the principles on which it is based. Linux, more formally known as GNU/Linux, is an operating system that is rapidly growing in popularity and is freely available to the public under the GNU General Public [...]

MPlayer to the Rescue

I finally got around to installing the Linux version of Real Player 10, but unfortunately it just didn’t work. The install appeared to go smoothly, and I even got a nifty icon in the KDE menu under Multimedia, but the program never opened or ran.

Slackware 10 Installed

I had messed around with Slackware in the past and really liked it, but I was having troubles getting on the internet with it so I dropped it and went on to Knoppix. Just recently I discovered why I was unable to get Slackware on the internet and that was due to a DNS [...]
