GNOME 2.8 & KDE 3.3 Reviewed

  • No Related Post

eWeek has been pretty good at covering Linux recently, and in the latest issue they review the latest offerings from KDE and GNOME.

Strangely enough, the two desktops receive the same score, and both score well. The reviewer does offer up a few complaints, but they’re all interface nits versus any real problems with functionality. If you ask me, that’s a good indicator of just how far the two desktops have come over the past few years.

The reviewer also mentions Garnome and Konstruct, two utilities that make it easier to download, compile, and install GNOME and KDE respectively. I’m not familiar with either tool, so I’m glad he brought them to my attention.

GNOME and KDE are often looked at as competitors, but in reading reviews like this it seems to me they’re both just two sides of the same coin. They offer the same features and functionality, just in a slightly different appearance or format. I’m a KDE man myself, but that’s no different from saying I prefer to spell it “ketchup” vs. “catsup”.

PoTAYto, poTAHto, just use what you’re comfortable with.
