Toshiba Keeps a Watchful Eye with Tux

Linux-powered surveillance cameras are not all that new, as companies like Axis and Panasonic have been making them for some time. These network-capable cameras include built-in web and FTP servers for flexible deployment and remote viewing, making them handy for companies with large networks or for small businesses looking for a cheap method of keeping an eye on their properties.

Toshiba, however, has a slick new camera in the works. It does the traditional web/ftp-server thing, but is also run by power over Ethernet, or PoE, removing the need to run power to the camera location. This is becoming more and more common as well.

But Toshiba took yet another step by providing an analog NTSC output in addition to the Ethernet connection. This way the camera can be tied to on-site CCTV systems as well as providing the usual web-based digital video options. Very slick, which results in the $600 price tag, but probably well worth it for anyone wanting to keep an eye on their valuables.
