Ever wonder approximately how many Linux users are out there? Check out the Linux Counter for a rough estimate. They currently put the number at around 18 million. Not too shabby!
If you like, you can also register your Linux machines with the project. Signing up gets you your own nifty ID number and a logo you can stick on a web page. The counter documents the specs of the machine, its role, and how many users have access to it. It also tracks the installed distro and mailer. With over a million registered users and machines, they should serve as a great resource for statistics.
I re-registered this morning, having first signed up a couple years ago while still working for a local high school. I unfortunately don’t have the account information any longer, but the machine is still there and in use. My new user ID is 366442 if you’d like to take a gander, with three registered machines. Two more will be going up this week.
