In Linux there is no shortage of variety when it comes to desktop managers. However XPde was one I had never heard of until it was mentioned in the O’Reilly Weblogs today. XPde according to the website is “a complete desktop environment for Linux on x86. It tries to make easier for Windows XP users to use a Linux box. Nothing more, no clipboard compatibility between Gtk and Qt applications, no emulation of Windows applications, no unification on the widgets of X applications, just a desktop environment.” Look at these screenshots
you will have to agree that the developers of XPde have certainly brought more than a touch of the Windows XP look to Linux.

Only problem I see with xpde as a great tool for helping convert the microsoft using masses is the lack of packages to install it. If a user is in need of something like xpde I doubt that they’ll be able to handle installing a desktop environment from a tar file. Drop a deb and a rpm there, or get it into the ubuntu archives and it’ll be a great tool for helping to raise the userbase of linux in general.
