Light the Filelight

One of the more understated yet very cool features of Linux Journal magazine is the small “filler entries” by David A. Bandel. I miss when they used to give him his own page, but I’m glad they still give him an opportunity to showcase new software I’d probably not otherwise hear about (except perhaps from my fellow Lockergnome contributors, of course ;p).

In the current issue, Bandel showcases a nifty utility called Filelight. Per the home page, Filelight “allows you to understand exactly where your diskspace is being used by graphically representating your filesystem as a set of concentric segmented-rings.” In other words, it’s similar to a pie chart of your filesystem. However, it shows you at a glance exactly where the bulk of your disk usage is rather than just telling you how much space you have consumed.

It’s available in source form as well as package format for a handful of distros. I’m going to download this bad boy myself as soon as I get back to my Linux boxen this evening. Thanks for throwing this one out there, David!
