Police Your Network with IPCop

  • No Related Post

If you’re looking for a router for your home network but desire more flexibility and utility than what most off-the-shelf units offer, you need to check out IPCop. It will handle firewalling, proxying, DMZs, and more, and is administered from a slick, web-based GUI.

I’ve not tinkered with it myself, but a number of schools in the southern Illinois area are using it as their main network routers. They’ve demonstrated its scaleability, as some of them are running small networks in a single building while others have several hundred machines behind a single box. It will run on older, spare hardware you may have lying around in a closet somewhere, and it offers the power and flexibility of Linux if you decided you’d like it to do more than just route and filter packets.
