Having worked in education for five years, I often think of schools as the perfect target market for Open Source. However, as Don Parris shows us in this Linux Journal column, Open Source is just as advantageous for the religious sector.

I’m not a religious man myself, so my reasoning for Open Source in churches is a bit more practical than philosophical. My father-in-law is a deacon of the local church and my wife contributes a little something to the collection plate every week. While I certainly don’t begrudge her doing so, I would certainly rather see the church put the money into parish projects, maintenance, or supplies rather than spending several hundred bucks on Windows, Office, accounting software, etc. The whole idea of the collection plate is to benefit the church and the parish, not line the pockets of corporate fatcats.
