Plug ‘n Play progress

Robert Love, Kernel developer and author, has expressed his desire to have Plug ‘n Play become a reality in Linux. I also think this could be very, very cool. However, I would not want to see all distros move in this direction and I will tell you why. As important as it is for Linux to begin to move to these technologies, I also believe that it is important for the hardcore users to be left alone at the same time. I know a number of Linux users that are all about the command line. These guys do not want Linux to turn into a wimpy OS that is so easy to use that it takes the fun out of using it.

If and I repeat if Plug ‘n Play technology for Linux does come about to the level it is at with OS X, then there needs to be a power users edition that stays true to the “old school Linux user”. It is the love of tweaking your system so that it is just as you would want it, not how some corporation dictates it should be. That is what many power users really want. Not a dressed up version of a Windows clone. This fine, there is no reason that there can be room for both in this world.
