Ultimate Linux printer database

Need a new printer? Have an older printer you’re struggling to get working on Linux? Your first stop needs to be LinuxPrinting.org.

This site has a huge database of printers and how well (or not) they work on Linux and other Unix-based systems such as FreeBSD and OS X. Some printers still have proprietary drivers that may not run on Linux, and others have features that are toned down or unworkable on Linux. For example, some laser printers may only work at 600×600 dpi rather than the full manufacturer’s spec. Multi-function systems, such as fax/scanner/copiers, are especially problematic and I highly recommend you drop by before purchasing one you plan to use with a Linux system.

The database is sorted by brand and model for ease of searching, and there are also purchase links so LinuxPrinting.org will get a small cut of the sale form certain resellers. If you currently own a printer that’s not listed, then by all means drop by and contribute your experiences; it may just benefit a future user. Tips on setting up printers that require the user to jump through several burning hoops before they cooperate are especially valuable.
