Cutting and Pasting

Cutting and pasting is actually a function of the x window side and can take a bit of getting used to after being used to the Windows way. Remember the Windows way? Highlight some text, press Ctrl-C to copy, then Ctrl-V to paste. The “Linux” way? Highlight some text and Ctrl-V. You can most likely skip the Ctrl-C step. Why? Well, if you didn’t want to copy that text, why did you highlight it? Window managers also offer utilities above and beyond the simple cut and paste - in KDE, I use Klipper. Klipper is a small program that sits in the system tray keeping a defined amount of previous contents placed in memory (like the Clipboard in Windows). However, don’t expect this to work all the time, everywhere. For instance, cutting and pasting between Windows 98 running in a Win4lin window ain’t gonna happen. There will be some gotchas, but get used to the way it works and you won’t think about it much - you’ll just highlight and paste. Others have their own thoughts on it, too, as seen here.
