Already poised “to become an explosive hit in Japan,” Linux is being considered by the governments of other Asian countries like China, South Korea, and Taiwan. “The Chinese are determined to say goodbye to Mr Bill Gates. The South Korean government is thinking seriously about it,” according to Hajime Watanabe, chief executive of Tokyo-based Linux supplier Turbolinux. Meanwhile, seemingly two-faced Microsoft continues its efforts to curry favor with various Asian governments while at the same time declaring that, as Microsoft spokesman Mark Martin puts it, “consumers and market forces, not government preferences, should determine software selection and development.”
