Kernel Configuration - Part XX
Today’s kernel piece is another easy one.
It raises some eyebrows to tell people that Linux natively supports amateur radio. “You mean those guys with the really tall radio towers in their backyards?” The very same. Linux has provided a unique adaptation in HAM radio, in the form of packet radio.
Packet radio really provides yet another method for global communication. Using what amounts to a hybrid of standard HAM radio and your Linux computer, you’re able to send messages and communicate with other HAM operators in much the same way as you would under a purely broadcast-based model. If you’ve had experience with HAM radio, the amateur radio support in Linux is well worth looking into. If not, but you’re interested in learning and, maybe, giving it a try, you’ll find this backgrounder useful. In any case, if you’re not using amateur radio now and have no plans to do so, you’ll keep your kernel a bit cleaner by leaving this support out.
And the kernel configuration series rolls on tomorrow …
