GeekLog

A week or so ago, I sang the praises of Geeklog - a system I’d used on the recommendation of reader Steve Waterman. As I’ve gotten to know this outstanding portal program better over the past few weeks, I’ve become even more a believer.
Geeklog is a full-blown web portal system, written in PHP and intended for use with MySQL. The package includes “blocks” for polls, news, user functions, upcoming events, archives, and much more. The blocks are fully configurable and easily added to or removed from your site. Geeklog also tracks comments on each article and a full set of site statistics.
The install is clearly outlined with instructions in the package. I followed them closely and had virtually no problems with the installation and configuration.
Perhaps best of all, the package is authored by Tony Bibbs, a fellow Iowan. Technology does rule in Iowa.
If you’re looking to post an interactive blog or portal site, Geeklog is a great choice for the underlying code package. The ease of installation, intuitive configuration and clean functional code make Geeklog a clear Penguin Shell recommendation. It’d be tough to do any better.
