Speed, Speed, Speed

Here’s a quick tweak to help speed up the boot process and, at least marginally, to help speed operations in Linux.

As root, use the following command

    /usr/sbin/ntsysv

to open a text-based startup configuration window. This screen allows you to set or services and daemons from the startup process. Use the up and down arrows to navigate within the screen and the space bar to add or remove a service from your startup. If you’re sure you won’t use the program, kill it by removing the asterisk from beside its name. Again, this is done with the space bar.

This configuration doesn’t actually kill a running process. To do that, you’ll need to do one of two things. a) kill the process manually using the service daemon stop command, where daemon is the name of the service, or b) reboot. You should see a noticeable improvement in your boot time with unnecessary services shut down.

The case can also be made that this will help speed your system up beyond the boot process. With unnecessary services shut down, your machine has more resources available for other tasks.

It’s all about speed, configurability, and efficiency.
