Googlizing Gnome

If you’ve used Internet Explorer in the past year or so, you’ve probably installed the Google search bar. I know I have. It’s a great timesaver. But, did you know you can have a similar feature in Gnome?

The first step in tweaking your browser for Google is to download the .tar.gz package here. Untar and unzip this file into a directory that you’ll remember - something that makes sense like /home/user. The tar file will create a /google directory. Once the file is in place, cd into the new directory and type make. The googlizer program does not have a configure file, so make is all it takes.

With the program compiled, right click on your Gnome panel and select Panel, Add to panel and launcher. You’ll get a launcher creation dialog box, which should be filled in something like this:

  1. Name: Google
  2. Comment: Google search
  3. Command: /path to your/googlizer/installation

You won’t need to run this in the terminal. From here, all you need to do is select text with your mouse, and click on the Googlizer panel icon. Googlizer will pass the text to Google and return the search results in your default Gnome browser.

See - you can have your Linux and Google searches, too.
