Occasionally, the default installation settings for your X server just aren’t quite perfect. Differences in monitors and video cards can’t always be perfectly accounted for in these default setups. For example, the picture may appear shortened, elongated, or shifted left or right. This sometimes happens even when the X server is given exactly the right information for configuring your display. Enter the xvidtune program - a simple program designed to help you tweak your display to perfection.

xvidtune is executable from the command line. When it’s executed, you’ll first see a disclaimer releasing the developers from liability for any damage to your monitor. Immediately following the disclaimer screen is the adjustment window. Using simple sliders, you can fine tune both the horizontal and vertical sync start and end frequencies for every color depth currently available to your X server. In other words, you can make the display taller, shorter, wider, or narrower simply by moving the sliders from side to side. You can also select the auto button, allowing the system to set itself. Other buttons in the GUI allow the user to test a current tweak or to restore the previous settings.

With xvidtune, there’s no reason to settle for a less-than-perfect Linux display.
