DOS/Win to Linux Command Guide

I’ve simply lost track of how many emails ask the same question: “What are equivalent DOS commands in Linux?” It’s a question that’s really too big to answer in a single newsletter. It’s also just ambiguous enough to be unanswerable over a series of articles. The truth is that Linux commands are so flexible that a single translation just doesn’t always work to reach an understanding of the power of a command. However, it’s still a legitimate question. Today’s GnomeCLICK provides a brief summary answer.

The DOS/Win to Linux Command Guide covers the 15 most-used commands in DOS and, by extension, in Win9x. It’s an accurate translation of the overlap between the two divergent systems. If you’re familiar with DOS, you’ll certainly find some help here in making the mental adjustment to the command prompt in Linux. Remember, though - this is a very limited set of commands translated from DOS to Linux. While this guide will set you on the path, it’s by no means a panacea. Let it open the possibilities if you will, then dig deeply into the Linux commands that stand on their own. Like any worthwhile journey, the resulting value is far more than the effort expended.
