Gentoo Linux
Unearthed by Kevin Anderson

“I have recently discovered an extremely great new linux distribution, named
Gentoo Linux. (http://www.gentoo.org/) It is more or less a freebsd style
system placed on the Linux kernel. At installation, you boot up from the
cdrom straight to a prompt, and proceed to compile your WHOLE system after
getting networking and disks set up, (even your compiler!!) optimised for
your cpu/system. once that is done, it also has a “ports” system ala
FreeBSD called portage. Portage is still a little lacking when it comes to
the number of apps compared to FreeBSD, but all the most common stuff is
there. Only thing that I wanted that wasn’t there is a webmin portage
.ebuild file. This distro is so nice, clean, minimalistic and fast that I
doubt I will use another distro any time soon. One of its nicer points I
think is that from the moment you reboot your system, you have the latest
kernel possible/reccomended, unlike most distros which are limited to the
original one that came with the install disk, so that you would have to
upgrade manually, which isnt easy with quite a few distros. I would love to
see this distro reviewed at the shell. It truly is slowly but surely
becoming something incredible. It also has a great, polite and helpfull
group of email lists, so IMHO, you can’t go wrong if you have a reasonable
amount of linux know-how, or just want to dig in and come out clean.”
