Just a few quick notes

Just a few quick notes for you today.

The AOL/RedHat merger seems to have been mere rumor. According to this article, these talks were never taking place to start with. Even when we thought they were, the best thinking had this merger as one that would give AOL an inside track to embedded devices, rather than as an offensive move against Microsoft. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see that line of discussion open up in the future between these two giants. RedHat has the infrastructure, AOL-Time Warner has the money. In the context of opening up the embedded Linux market, such a merger would only be marginally distasteful.

The response to the blog was very, very encouraging. You all sure know how to make a guy feel good. There haven’t been many comments posted, but I did see a substantial increase in my email traffic from those of you who have visited. I’ll emphasize that while the site takes my peculiar perspective on news, events in the world and tech happenings, it’s really your playground as much as it’s mine. If you visit, feel free to comment. I always love what you have to say.

Finally, I’d like to open an invitation to the gurus amongst us to step up the participation in Penguin Shell. I’m planning a series the week of February 4 - 8 on shell scripting. It seems the perfect time to solicit the best, most useful scripts from the gurus among us to use in the scripting series. In effect, I’d like to series to be written by those who’ve found interesting and useful ways to leverage the power of their Linux systems to their personal purposes. With shell scripting, the possibilities are really endless. Accordingly, I won’t place any limitation or guidelines on the scripts you’re willing to share with the rest of us. I’ll just use my better judgment in posting them. If you have a script that you think will benefit the Penguin Shell community, feel free to submit it.
