Happy New Year

I’m not much for looking back, in most cases. I’d much rather keep my eyes to the future. But the turn of a new year can hardly pass without giving some thought to the calendar slipping by. And, living on the Internet, there are an abundance of ways to take a few moments for reflection. My favorite, produced by the fine folks at NPR is an audio retrospective of 2001. I was driving for Sunday donuts yesterday morning when this piece first aired. It reminded me that there were, indeed, significant news events prior to September 11. It’s as much a retrospective on ‘before and after’ as it is on the calendar. And, more importantly, it’s a reminder that we all move forward from one day to the next, regardless of the circumstances of the world. There’s hope in that strength.
Like Chris, I’m not much for wild parties - that’s something that passed many calendars ago. I’m likely to spend the turn of the new year where I sit right now - working on Penguin Shell or designing the Penguin Shell archive. I’ll undoubtedly pause, hug my family, and look for a moment to the year ahead. From where I sit today, it all looks pretty good. I hope you find the same in your own moment.
Happy New Year, and thanks for a remarkable 2001.
