Partition Image for Linux (PIL) is designed for partition-wide backups or cloning. It’s similar in function to programs like Norton Ghost and includes a boot disk for restoring your partitions. This program has value under several scenarios. Using PIL to back up your Linux partitions will allow you to restore them quickly in the event of a catastrophic failure. By excluding the partition slack space, these images can be as much as one-half their original size, making it possible to ghost 1 Gb + partitions to a single CD. PIL also features the ability to span these images across multiple discs. If you’re a system builder, PIL has even more value. The ability to image partitions means system builders can develop a stock setup for Linux boxes and clone those partitions to many boxes. It’s a real time saver when setting up several Linux computers at once.

Daemons, ghosting … what’s going on here?
