ABiWord is, as the name suggests, a standalone word processing program. Not just for Linux, AbiWord is available for Windows, Linux/PPC, QNX, FreeBSD, and NetBSD. The design is a page straight out of Redmond - a two-edged sword, if you will. Word users will be immediately comfortable with the interface. Linux die-hards may scoff at the imitation. Interestingly enough, AbiWord does have the capability to emulate vi and emacs. Clearly some jockeying for the *nix market, there.

Regardless, the setup was easy and every feature I tested worked as it should. Not bad for a late beta version (0.9.5). If your office chores comprise only word processing, AbiWord is a strong, lightweight package that will fill the bill.
