I’ve been on a roll here, lately. A few weeks ago, I loaded Ximian Gnome as my DE. I’ve loved it as have, apparently, many of you that downloaded and installed it. Yesterday, I came across 3Dwm, the 3D Window Manager. This really hold some promise.

I can appreciate eye candy on my desktop. I spend so much time in front of a monitor that what it’s rendering should at least be pleasant to look at. 3Dwm is stunning. As the name implies, this window manager transforms your desktop from a traditional flat surface to a rich and appealing 3D environment. It’s so different as to be a bit disorienting at first. It does take a bit of mental adjustment to break out of the 2D realm I’ve lived in for many years. But 3Dwm is is well worth the gymnastics.

This is an early version of the desktop. As such, there are a few glitches. And, you’ll need to check the dependencies link on the site to make sure you’re fully equipped for the change. Once that’s done, you’ll begin to see the potential of 3d modelling and desktop environments. I found it very exciting.
