While we’re embarked on the Great Distro Review, it seems appropriate to mention some of the other distributions available from smaller code shops. While LinuxFromScratch (LFS) isn’t really a distribution as we know them, it’s an interesting guide to creating one uniquely your own. LFS provides packages, information, and a very useful FAQ to answer some of the questions that may arise when building your own Linux distribution. There’s even an interesting paper on creating a fully functional Linux system in 5 Mb. The author makes a great case for LFS as it relates to security. By building your system from the ground up, rather than accepting the packages provided by the major distributions, you know exactly which security measures have been built in. You know they work, and you have the ability to audit them fully. LFS seems to be a throwback to the pre-major distribution days when everyone created their own Linux system.
