Today’s GnomeFILE isn’t exactly a Linux file. Instead, it’s a way to use Linux commands in a DOS shell within Windows. It’s a practice file, if you will.

CygWin is a set of GNU development tools ported to Windows. It works, in part, by emulating the UNIX system calls and creating a bash-like environment. Whether or not you’re interested in using CygWin for development, it’s a useful exercise tool for using bash commands, without ever leaving your Windows OS. The site has extensive documentation aimed at both hardcore developers and average users.
